This year we decided to visit Mount Vernon to celebrate Presidents' Day, and George Washington's 287th birthday. EVERY Presidents' Day, admission to George Washington's Mount Vernon is FREE to the public!
Mount Vernon, which is located on the banks of the Potomac River, only 30 minutes outside of D.C., was Washington's plantation. Visitors to Mount Vernon will first come upon the Donald W. Reynolds Museum and Education Center where you can learn about Washington, his family, and Mount Vernon. A few of the other things you will get to see and experience include: Washington's mansion, the tomb of George and Martha Washington, a memorial dedicated to the enslaved people who lived and worked on the estate, a replica of a slave cabin, livestock, Washington’s many gardens, and TONS more (the place huge!).
If you get hungry after all the walking we’ll do while touring the grounds, there is a cafeteria and a restaurant located on the premises. The Mount Vernon Inn Restaurant serves food from the time period. They are open for lunch and dinner daily and serve brunch on Sundays.
On Presidents' Day, the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association, the group that manages and preserves Mt. Vernon, hosts a day of special events running from 10am-3pm. One of the more exciting events was the "Official Observance Ceremony of George Washington's Birthday & Special Military Demonstration" where you could watch Continental soldiers of the Commander-in-Chief's Guard conduct drills and charge at their enemies in a military demonstration.
All-in-all, George Washington's Mount Vernon is a very scenic and historical destination that makes for an enjoyable visit for any person no matter the age.
PROTIP: Visit in the spring or summer when the many gardens are in bloom. We plan on going back in the Spring via bicycle by following the Mt. Vernon Trail that runs from Washington D.C. to Mount Vernon (38 miles RT).
